Introduction to Image J

Approximate Time: 1 hour
Pre-requisite: None

Image J is a free image processing program inspired by NIH Image. Because it runs under Java (the engine that runs applets in your web browser), it works on virtually any platform (Windows, Macintosh, Linux, etc). ImageJ can read many image formats (including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, and "raw"), and can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. ImageJ was designed with an open architecture that provides extensibility via Java plugins: a library of time-saving acquisition, analysis and processing plugins can be found on the ImageJ website. The introductory ImageJ course covers:

1. Installing ImageJ and plugins on a Windows platform
2. Using standard image processing functions, including smoothing, sharpening, edge detection, and contrast enhancement
3. Selecting and measuring areas, intensities, distances, and angles
4. Creating histograms and line profile plots
5. Working with stacks, including a timeseries and confocal z-stack
